NFL – Fantasy Football Draft and so much more

5 Sep

This week is the beginning of football which means a lot to a lot of people.

Last weekend I partook in a new ritual called Fantasy Football Draft day!

On Sunday I went to the in-laws and watched some young men and some old men pick their teams for the upcoming Fantasy Football season HA! It was crazy and fun. I “helped” the father-in-law with his team. I really Googled athlete’s names and told him if they were hurt or what the fantasy people were saying about them. I don’t know how helpful I really was.

An hour later everyone had their teams and it was over.

It was so cute how excited they all got about their Fantasy Football teams! And I think is funny that a lot of them forget who THEIR team is and start to care about their fantasy players. They stop cheering for one team and start cheering for a bunch of people on different teams.

However this week also brings something new for my brother any I. It’s not only the first week of the 2012 football season, but it’s the first week of football season without our dad.

And today is the Dallas vs. Giants game.

My dad always said he had two favorite teams, the Cowboys and whoever was playing the Giants.

So today will be exciting for the hordes of Cowboy fans in New Mexico and all over the country (and my cousin Monica who is like the only Giant fan in New Mexico – I know weird) but for my brother and I it will be a little sad. We still plan on doing something special Wednesday but it will be a first, among other firsts we have had to deal with this year.

Either way I am excited for football season. My favorite thing to do is lay on the couch during football season and leave the windows open and cuddle up under blanket and take a nap at halftime! I love the brisk weather football season brings!

So to everyone who loves football or just the festivities that come with it – enjoy!

PS my dad was a cool Cowboy fan – not an annoying fan most people hate. He would never paint his car with a  big star on it or throw a TV out of the window or refer to them as “his boys” – He was a classy fan.

And also – before I forget – to the real sports lovers out there, a couple of my friends have an amazing sports blog. They draw/paint old sports legends and write funny stories, poems and other things about them. It’s called Little Happy Clouds

My top five favorite Olympians

Jesse Owens – USA

Jesse Owens

Jess Owens was part of the 1936 Olympic in Hitler’s Germany. He made history when he won four gold medals in the following events:

–          100 meters

–          200 meters

–          The long jump

–          And as part of the 4×100 meter relay team

When I was in middle school I read a book about his life and I think that is why I like him so much! He has an amazing story before the Olympics, during and after. Read all about him here.

Nadia Comaneci – Romania

The Romanian gymnast has won 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 1 bronze throughout her Olympic career.  Nadia is the first gymnast to ever achieve a perfect 10. Something people though impossible – the score board (I think that’s what it’s called) could not even display the score. It showed a 1.0 confusing some people.

I attached her routine below. It’s so different and impossible to do today because of how far apart the bars are today. Also with the new scoring system the days of perfect 10’s are no longer a possibility. But we will never forget the 14-year-old Nadia who was the first to achieve such a high honor.

Nadia is still involved in gymnastics, read more about her here.

Michael Phelps – United States

Michael Phelps – United States

Michael Phelps 16 Olympic medals. I really don’t need to say any more about Michael Phelps. If you don’t know who he is, I really can’t help you. Google him.

Larissa Latynina – Soviet Union

Larisa Latynina – Soviet Union

Larissa Latynia is arguably the best athlete in the history of the Olympics. She holds 18 total medals, more Olympic medals than any other competitor in any sport, and was responsible for establishing the Soviet Union as the dominant force in gymnastics.  She also holds the record for most individual medals (14 outside of team events) in Olympic history.

Usain Bolt – Jamaica

Usain Bolt – Jamaica

Again, you should know all about this man. He is the world record and Olympic record holder in the 100 meters, the 200 meters and (along with his teammates) the 4×100 meters relay.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for this man because the husband and I went to Jamaica for our honeymoon in 2009 one year after his famous Olympic debut and this guy’s face was all over the place. On cups, flags, ash trays (weird) so he reminds me of our honeymoon.

Usain Bolt will be fun to watch in London – and if you go to his website you will see why.

Sports, Olympics, NBA and funny look alikes!

I love sports!

Yes – it’s a fact – and a happy fact for my husband! I love and would like to think I  am knowledgeable in sports. Thanks to my Dad, brother, husband and father-in-law. I know a lot more than I should about sports. I should really refocus my knowledge of sports facts, rules and trivia to make-up and fashion. But – I grew up in a household who worshiped the Dallas Cowboys, Michael Jordan, Emit Smith the 1996 US Gymnastic team (Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Kerri Strug, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps or better known as The Magnificent 7)

I kid you not – my brother Nick and I spent the day I was supposed to celebrate my college graduation watching the NFL Draft. We were very concerned where Matt Leinart would end up and we were late to my party! But that is one of my favorite memories!

So I LOVE sports – not all sports – I don’t care for baseball unless I am actually at a baseball park, but even then it’s the people food and atmosphere not the actual sport. I don’t know much about Tennis(although I wish I did), any sailing or rowing type sports – I live in the desert! I know nothing about NASCAR, Formula 1 or race car crap, if you consider that race car crap a sport.

So in honor of the NBA Playoffs – which I made a ridiculous bet with my Father-In-Law that includes the LA Clippers going further in the playoffs than the Boston Celtics (which sucks because I LOVE the Celtics, I was counting on the Bulls to knock out the Celtics in the second round and Chauncey Billups was a healthy man when this bet was made) oh well – I have included a fun look alike photo gallery for your enjoyment. Even if you don’t love basketball (weird) you will enjoy these odd players and their movie star twins!
