My top five favorite Olympians

Jesse Owens – USA

Jesse Owens

Jess Owens was part of the 1936 Olympic in Hitler’s Germany. He made history when he won four gold medals in the following events:

–          100 meters

–          200 meters

–          The long jump

–          And as part of the 4×100 meter relay team

When I was in middle school I read a book about his life and I think that is why I like him so much! He has an amazing story before the Olympics, during and after. Read all about him here.

Nadia Comaneci – Romania

The Romanian gymnast has won 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 1 bronze throughout her Olympic career.  Nadia is the first gymnast to ever achieve a perfect 10. Something people though impossible – the score board (I think that’s what it’s called) could not even display the score. It showed a 1.0 confusing some people.

I attached her routine below. It’s so different and impossible to do today because of how far apart the bars are today. Also with the new scoring system the days of perfect 10’s are no longer a possibility. But we will never forget the 14-year-old Nadia who was the first to achieve such a high honor.

Nadia is still involved in gymnastics, read more about her here.

Michael Phelps – United States

Michael Phelps – United States

Michael Phelps 16 Olympic medals. I really don’t need to say any more about Michael Phelps. If you don’t know who he is, I really can’t help you. Google him.

Larissa Latynina – Soviet Union

Larisa Latynina – Soviet Union

Larissa Latynia is arguably the best athlete in the history of the Olympics. She holds 18 total medals, more Olympic medals than any other competitor in any sport, and was responsible for establishing the Soviet Union as the dominant force in gymnastics.  She also holds the record for most individual medals (14 outside of team events) in Olympic history.

Usain Bolt – Jamaica

Usain Bolt – Jamaica

Again, you should know all about this man. He is the world record and Olympic record holder in the 100 meters, the 200 meters and (along with his teammates) the 4×100 meters relay.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for this man because the husband and I went to Jamaica for our honeymoon in 2009 one year after his famous Olympic debut and this guy’s face was all over the place. On cups, flags, ash trays (weird) so he reminds me of our honeymoon.

Usain Bolt will be fun to watch in London – and if you go to his website you will see why.

2012 Summer Olympics (Part 1)

20 Jul

Holy crap! I am so excited! I love the Olympics! Love love love them!!!

And guess what? They are in exactly one week!

YAY!!!!!!

I am so excited!!

So here is some fun Olympic stuff:

To vote for the all-time best Olympic moment go to this link. It’s also fun to relive some of the great moments throughout the games.

Below are some videos I found that list what they believe are the top Olympic moments.

I will admit the music is cheesy and the narrator could be a little more excited – but all his comments are spot on and he picked the perfect moments!

The only one he missed is Kerri Strug’s famous vault!! Which I have included below.

Enjoy!
