Running Update and Running Apps

14 Aug

So the Color Run is less than a couple weeks away! Since my knees suck I went to the doctor and was told I have Chondromalacia Patella.

This sounds way worse than it is. My knee caps just slide to the side when they should go straight. All I need is to stretch and do some strengthening exercises to strengthen my muscles. I can also tape my knees so it helps the knee cap glide correctly.

But I can run! So that’s fantastic – kind of.

I have a couple goals for the color run:

  1. Don’t come in last
  2. Run the whole way
  3. Have fun – so cheesy but I really do want to have fun and enjoy this so I can continue to run

And I have discovered some awesome running aps that have helped with my goals and I want to share with you!

Map My Run

Map My Run – This does just what it says. It will help you plan your run and keep track of all your running.

Run Keper

Runkeeper – This app helps you keep track of how long you have run, how fast and tells you how many calories. It’s nice because when I run I need to know how long before the next mile so this is perfect because it tells me every quarter mile I run and the time plus my pace. You can set it so that it tells you ever quarter mile, half mile or mile. It also has a “coach” to help you boost your time and endurance.

Couch to 5K

Couch to 5K by Zen Labs – This app helps people get into running. It is an eight week program that alternates running and walking so you can build strength. You only work out three times as week with this app. It’s great and helps a lot!

New Healthy Habit – Sitting on a Fitness Ball!

25 Jul

Some of my colleagues have these fitness balls at their desks and I have always been a little intrigued by them.

I finally had the balls (hahaha) to ask one of these colleagues if I could try it out for a bit.

I sit at a desk for eight hours a day and that cannot be good for your backside. I don’t have the option to lift my desk so I can stand and use my desk so I thought the ball might be a great option.

I also need any little trick to burn an few extra calories, because let’s face it I love to eat bad and drink wine.

So, after my trial, I decided I liked it and let’s face it the ball is only $15 at my home away from home Target.

I looked up the benefits of this and found some good tips at Livestrong.com – check out what they said here.

I also found some helpful tips here.

So I am going to try it out and see what happens. Hopefully I don’t fall off.

Anyone else try these balls to sit on at work or home?

My desk and my ball.

This is what I found you should do to make it more comfortable while sitting on the ball.

  • Bounce. Gently bouncing on the ball aligns your spine in its most efficient position and improves the endurance of your postural muscles. Bounce for a few minutes at least every hour that you are sitting. Never bend or twist while you are bouncing. Enjoy.
  • Hip Rolls. While Sitting On A Fitness Ball make a circle with your hips. Do 10 circles in each direction about every hour. This will help to relieve and stretch the muscles of your hips, pelvis, and spine.

  • Pelvic Tilts. Tuck your pelvis under and then go the opposite way by sticking your butt out. Move back and forth, going a little further each time. Repeat about 10 times. This motion opens up the muscles around the pelvis and low back.

Color Run

19 Jul

I can’t say that my running hobby has been going too great. . . And 85% of that is my fault (I am lazy) – the other 15% is the fact that my knee sucks!

But I am going to fix this.

First I am going to the doctor so they can fix my knees!

Second I signed up for the Color Run! This way I HAVE TO START RUNNING SO I DON’T LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT! Even though I will be covered in lots of “color dust”

Hopefully the fact that I am paying to run (I know how stupid of me) and the fact that I don’t want to come in dead last will motivate me!

So here’s to doctors, luck, a little hope and a miracle!

The run is August 25th!

Anyone else ever do the color run?

Concrete Angel?

5 Jun

I have a seasonal hobby – a summer hobby – a hobby many homeowners (and some renters) share – yard projects.

The husband and I bought our house a few years ago – the back yard was a great size but it was a huge dirt space. So every summer we add concrete and make it a little less dusty – this summer had been no different.

This weekend we laid more concrete. I know way more about concrete and laying it and the tools that you need than someone who would rather pay to have their yard landscaped. However, my wonderful husband believes in doing things yourself (which is really quite attractive) – And makes him seem super smart because he knows how to lay concrete and do other weird DIY stuff that I have no idea where he learned. Well actually I lie – I know where he acquired this knowledge from – his dad, who lucky for us is sweet enough to help us with all our yard work. And so is Shane’s brother Gavin and my brother Nick.

I would also like to point out that I totally helped too! There is a job for everyone when it comes to concrete! You always need a gofer and someone to do the annoying little things the “real” words don’t want to! Also, I must say, I am strong! I handled those 80LB bags of concrete like a champ!

Doing yard work is especially rewarding to me because Shane rewards me with food, as long as I don’t complain! The rule is I help, he feeds me. And I don’t feel bad eating horrible food because I just lifted nine 80 pound concrete bags and five 60 pound mortar bags. And did all the other fun concrete stuff like drive a wheel barrel full of wet concrete and shovel it into tight places.

I never knew how hard it was to “build” and make things. Hats off to ALL construction workers who do this for a living. And I am especially in awe of construction workers who do this in the heat! It was 90 degrees this weekend – I can’t imagine doing manual labor in Las Cruces where we used to live or any other place that is horribly hot! Construction works of Phoenix you are my hero’s!

Another thing about doing all this yard work – after a long day of working you smell horribly, have concrete stuck to you in the weirdest places and are so tired you can hardly walk. But after a nice shower – You get the BEST SLEEP EVER!!!!!

No need for a sleeping pill or any other sleep aid! Can’t sleep you should think of becoming a construction worker.

It is so rewarding to sleep after you put your body through the ringer. And having a nice place to relax outside (after you are done and clean up) is so fantastic! It’s also crazy to see what started as a patch of dirt is now a cool patio Even if your husband won’t let you put your handprints and name and year in the concrete.

I have included some yard work/DIY work for women below:

1. Wear A LOT of sunscreen! Don’t get burned! Make sure you use sunscreen and apply every two hours. Especially if you are working with concrete or anything else that requires the use of water.

I discovered this great sunscreen that is not oily and goes on super-fast! After two days of doing work outside I didn’t burn once!

Also throw away your sunscreen after a year – it goes bad and is not as potent after a year.

2. Drink A LOT of water! I mean this A LOT!!! You are out all day and sweating, you need to drink water so you don’t get dizzy and fall face first into the wet concrete! That would be horrible! So make sure you and your helpers stay hydrated! With water, beer should not be consumed until after you are done and all sharp objects are put away. . . .

3. Get some pretty/fun girly stuff. It will make you more excited to work! Target, Home Depot and Lowes all have “accessories” for women. Cute gloves or a hat will make you feel better about all the manual labor you will be doing.

I found these accessories. Also, get a knee cushion especially if you are gardening or doing concrete because you will be on your knees all day (no need for gross jokes!) – Your knees will thank you later.

So for all of you doing DIY yard or house projects have fun and you are in my prayers. For all of you who are paying other people to do it for you – well screw you! And please talk to my husband . . . .

Slacker

30 May

That’s me! I am a slacker! And I am slacking at my blogging duties! I apologize profusely! Let me tell you what happened. I got LAZY! That’s it – I suck!

Actually I feel like since May started I have been so busy. Every weekend has been booked and that threw off my blogging groove.

See, I am creature of habit. I need a routine. So my normal routine was get up early on Saturday and go running in the Bosque – then come home and feel really good about myself because I just ran and exercised and was active. Then sit on the couch (which was ok because I just ran) and crank out some blogs!

This was my favorite part of the weekend! Is that sad? Does this mean I have no life? Oh well – I really looked forward to this routine. Then all of a sudden May hit and BAM routine went out the window! There were graduation parties, garage sales, weddings and other events. June is shaping up to be the same.

So I need a new routine and need to fit blogging in because I really enjoy it! And not only did I become a slacker in my blogging reports, but also in my pursuit of hobbies! I have not been running as much or cooking or doing the other things I said I would. Aside from reading, I have lost track of my other hobbies!!!

BUT I am back! I am making time again for my hobbies come hell or high water!

I did manage to read a few books that I will report on at a later date.

So again, sorry for being a slacker – it probably won’t be the last time – but for now I am at it again!

Stay Tuned . . . .

Lemon Poppy Dressing – with a salad

27 Apr

So this is just what it sounds like, a salad. However, this dinner is all about the dressing!

And since I am trying to cook more dinners, this dressing recipe is something I love and it healthy!

For the salad –

I like to use spinach not bore snore lettuce – but use whatever greens you like mixed with; cucumbers, carrots broccoli and any other veggies you like.

Slice strawberries and add those in. Also, mandarin oranges, pears and apples work just as well!

Toast some almonds, walnuts or pecans. Make sure you toast them, it make them taste SO MUCH better in the salad. You know the nuts are done toasting when you can smell the woody deliciousness!

Add some feta cheese.

You can also include grilled chicken, shrimp or some other type of protein.

Now for the best part the dressing which is healthy – hooray!!!

Light Lemon-Poppy Dressing

1/4 cup low-fat yogurt, (I like Greek yogurt)

1 tsp lemon juice – I also zest the lemon (is that how you say it?)

1 tsp sweetener of choice (I added honey)

pinch of salt

1 tsp oil

1 tsp vinegar

1 tsp poppy seeds

Directions:

To make the dressing, whisk all of the ingredients together and place in a covered container.

Chill briefly in the fridge while preparing the salad.

When you are ready to serve the salad, add the dressing, and gently mix together.

Serve immediately.

We (the husband and I) also used lime in place of the lemon and it tasted just as good! Have fun and enjoy!

My New Obsession – and why I am sometimes late places

26 Apr

I inherited an espresso/latte maker.  I LOVE it, although, I am still perfecting the art of the latte. Fortunately for me, my brother used to be employed at Starbucks so he has been able to give me tips.

I have been making “skinny” vanilla lattes thanks to my friend Arantha who bought me sugar free vanilla syrup.

And although my lattes don’t look fancy– they are delicious!

Here are my tips for the best homemade latte!

  • Make sure you give yourself plenty of time in the morning to make it – and clean up – so your husband does not get mad.
  • Grind the espresso beans when people are awake. Not in the morning when your brother who works the evening news is still asleep. Because he is grumpy in the morning and does not want to be shocked into consciousness with the sound of a grinder.
  • If you are really tired because you are dumb and stayed up later than you should have reading (because you are a nerd) or because you had some other less nerdy more important reason to stay up – make your latte a double or triple or whatever. Which means you make two, three four or eight espresso shots and pour your steamed milk over those shots!
  • Pour the syrup into your cup then pour the espresso then pour the steamed milk.
  • If you are running out of time – make it an iced latte. All you need to do is make the espresso. No need to steam the milk  (which I tried because I am an idiot and my brother pointed out that I was just putting it on ice either way . . . )
  • Don’t go to a place where there are no bathrooms after you enjoy your latte – because those things go right through you. And being in the middle of a really good movie or church sucks when the latte hits!
  • Make one for a friend, relative or co-worker so they appreciate your hard work – and like you more!

That’s all hope you enjoy! Or just go to a coffee shop and get one. However, a bag of espresso beans costs just as much as one medium vanilla latte.
