Happy New Year?

11 Feb

Yeah it’s February but one thing you should know about me – I am always late. I am trying to fix that and have been doing a better job but sometimes I slip into old habits and show up a little late for things. This is my excuse explanation for the lack of new blogs.

January was such a crazy busy month for me and I feel like I am finally catching up. So just know I have some great new hobbies to try and old hobbies to report on.

The 12 Dates of Christmas was a successful hobby I might have to reinvent that into something like the Four Dates of Labor Day of something (get ready husband).  I got a lot of reading done so I have some new books to report on. I also want to try a lot of news activities. I am turning 30 this year so I believe I can get away with doing some unexpected things…..

Running Update and Running Apps

14 Aug

So the Color Run is less than a couple weeks away! Since my knees suck I went to the doctor and was told I have Chondromalacia Patella.

This sounds way worse than it is. My knee caps just slide to the side when they should go straight. All I need is to stretch and do some strengthening exercises to strengthen my muscles. I can also tape my knees so it helps the knee cap glide correctly.

But I can run! So that’s fantastic – kind of.

I have a couple goals for the color run:

  1. Don’t come in last
  2. Run the whole way
  3. Have fun – so cheesy but I really do want to have fun and enjoy this so I can continue to run

And I have discovered some awesome running aps that have helped with my goals and I want to share with you!

Map My Run

Map My Run – This does just what it says. It will help you plan your run and keep track of all your running.

Run Keper

Runkeeper – This app helps you keep track of how long you have run, how fast and tells you how many calories. It’s nice because when I run I need to know how long before the next mile so this is perfect because it tells me every quarter mile I run and the time plus my pace. You can set it so that it tells you ever quarter mile, half mile or mile. It also has a “coach” to help you boost your time and endurance.

Couch to 5K

Couch to 5K by Zen Labs – This app helps people get into running. It is an eight week program that alternates running and walking so you can build strength. You only work out three times as week with this app. It’s great and helps a lot!

What exercise apps do you like?

My Most Favorite Hobby! Reading!!

23 Jul

The one hobby I know I can stick with is reading!

I love reading. And I just read a couple really good books! The kind of books you can’t put down and you stay up really late to read “one more chapter” – before you know it it’s 4:30 Wednesday morning and you know you have to drink a quadruple latte so you make it through the morning and a then grab a Red Bull for lunch so you can make it through the afternoon and come home and keep reading!

I love that feeling.

I had lost it after I read 50 Shades of Crap. I thought I found it with Game of Thrones but the book is soooo much like the first season of the show that I got a little board. Don’t get me wrong – if you have not seen the show read the book. They show did such a great job I am just going to skip the first book (I only got half way through) and start reading the second book.

So here are a couple books I couldn’t put down:

Savages – by Don Winslow

I have not seen the movie but the book was amazing! But isn’t the book always more amazing than the movie? Yes but this book was exceptional because the writing was so different than what I am used to. It really made you think about what you were reading. And not in an annoying way that makes you feel dumb.

This book was fast paced, fun, sexy, crazy, violent and had twists and turns. I fell in love with all the characters and feel like I learned a lot about the Mexican drug cartels.

Number one lesson – don’t get involved in any way with the Mexican drug cartels! Don’t get involved with the selling, distributing or production of drugs and be surprised when you or someone you love get your knee caps shot up!

So, if you need something different, fast paced and crazy to read – I suggest this book.

I am looking forward to reading the prequel – The Kings of Cool.

Gone Girl – by Gillian Flynn

I love anything by Gillian Flynn!

This book however was so good but so frustrating at the same time! I have never hated the main characters in a book so much but still loved the book until I read this.

Both characters are such awful people! I couldn’t decide which I felt sorry for and which I wanted to “win” – I also didn’t know who to believe!

I would say 99% of the time in a book, movie, TV show, competition of any kind – I am rooting for the girl. Call me a feminist I always want the woman to win.

But in this book – it’s the first time I was not automatically rooting for the woman. I really tried to be on her side but she really made it hard.

This book kept me on my toes and made me sad Gillian Flynn only has two other books which I have already read. Write more lady, I love your books!!!

And so will you so please read this book and her other two! You won’t be sorry!

Jam Plan!

18 Jul

Apricots are my favorite fruit!

I love them so much I eat them before they are ready!

I grew up in a small town called Jemez Springs and we always had a lot of apricot trees.

Well, it’s odd to most people but everyone from Jemez would eat the apricots before they were ripe. So they were a little green and a little hard – but they are so good. Especially when you put a little salt on them!

This year we had a lot of apricots and my mom sent me home with a whole bunch. Because I wanted to try something new that reminded me of someone I love!

My Grandma would always make jelly when I was little. She would go to a cannery and make jam with her friends – oh and I tagged a long because I was always with her!

This year because we had so many apricots and they were no longer firm or green like I love them I decided to try something different. I made apricot jam and it came out delicious! This is how I did it!

Enjoy!

Recipe adapted from here

Apricot Jam

What you need:

8 cups diced apricots

1/4 cup lemon juice ( I ran out of lemons at one point so I used lime and it worked great)

6 cups sugar

1 tablespoon butter – you really need this so the apricot jam does not get to watery or foamy. Add this once it starts to boil

(I also added a pinch of salt. I don’t know if that’s against jam rules but I did it and I think it made the apircots stand out more!)

Tips – I used six cups the first time and the second time I cut it in half. I would suggest you start with three cups and taste the jam as it cooks – add more sugar if youthink it needs more.

Make sure you use a cold spoon when you taste the jam. This will also help you determine if the jelly is done. When you scoop it out with the cold spoon, if it’s runny let it boil longer. If you like the consistency you’re done!

Directions:

Sterilize your canning jars by boiling for 10 minutes in a hot water canner or the dishwasher

You will need 5 pint jars or 10 half-pints.

Combine all ingredients in a large stock pot.

Bring to boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves.

Once mixture reaches a rolling boil, continue to boil it for 30 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent it from sticking.

Remove from heat and fill jars, leaving 1/4 head space.

Wipe rims clean and put the 2-piece metal canning lids in place.

Process in boiling water canner for 10 minutes. Or if you put the hot jam in the cans it will seal the cans. Just make sure you can’t pop the top of the can when the lid is closed.

Tip –This is a great time to use the chalk board mason jars and write what kind of jam you made. Good for gifts and being organized!

Childhood Hobbies Reinvented

8 Jun

I work in a highly secure building! The security here is air tight – you cannot get into our building unless your name is Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt or your name has numbers in it ie 007! Or you just wait until someone walks by and you ask them to open the door 🙂

So it’s important that I NEVER lose my name badge – well that I never lose my second name badge. The first one was stolen by a 007 type or maybe I just forgot it somewhere in the universe.

It’s also important that you have a cute lanyard to put said name badge on. And finding these cute lanyards is near impossible!

So one day my wonderful friend and office mate Rochelle got me this amazing and beautiful lanyard! It had blue jewels and it sparkled! I loved the hell out of it. Maybe too much. Because soon, sadly, the lanyard started to fall apart L And I had to keep gluing it back together. Yes, I admit, I kept super glue at my desk just to preserve the lanyard. I not only superglue my fingers together but I accidently glued my phone to my desk. Now my iPhone case will forever have a piece of my desk attached to it L

The lanyard also started to pull my hair out, and I knew it was time to retire that lanyard and get a new one.

RIP

RIP

But like I said, it’s not easy to find cute lanyards. So Rochelle and I thought we would make our own! I used to be good at making friendship bracelets back in elementary! That is cheap and fun. In fact, my sister-in-law has a friendship making bracelet book!

So I asked Gianna (sis-in-law) to find the book. She thought it was in their storage shed. And I crawled over boxes, at night, a little tipsy to get to the box that held the book – only to discover the book was in her room the whole time.

Once Rochelle and I had the book, we needed the string. One day at lunch we ventured to an arts and crafts store and got a shit load of string for like 32 cents. And we also found a cute little Chinese restaurant that didn’t charge us much more for a meal! Double score (eww that sounds like 50 Shades)

After some practice, our lanyards came out beautiful! And believe me it’s not easy to make these bracelets in a house full of cats. Making these in front of my cats is like torture for them. They do sometimes give in and attack me with the string.

Once we became experts – we started getting requests from friends for normal bracelets.

I of course asked the husband what kind he would like and he picked the hardest pattern in the book which requires an engineering degree and the ability to do algebra with string. So he is not getting one.

Our friends Dan and Cannon, who have the pleasure of attending a little music even called the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) will be sporting our fabulous bracelets! And although we won’t be there physically, our spirits will in our bracelets – PLUR (hahahah just kidding!)

But seriously we wish we could go – maybe we will start selling our bracelets and make enough money to go next year!

Anyways, this is a new hobby of mine. Well more like a recycled hobby of mine. These are fun to do, let’s you be creative and you can give them to people which is also fun. I am happy that I still enjoy making these as much as I did when I was little.

Although, I sometimes feel like a loser who has a lot of cats and sits at home making friendship bracelets for fun! That does not sound good on paper – it’s like being a 32 year old boy scout!! Thank god I can drink while I make these bracelets, or I might be embarrassed enough to stop!

50 Shades of something. . . .

6 Jun

So like I have said before, I LOVE READING!! It will always be my #1 Hobby!!

That being said, I don’t always love what I read. For example I tried to read Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game. Which is right up my alley and I am fond of Stephen King (mostly his short stories) but I could not get through this book. I was not excited to read it and I didn’t want to go to bed early just so I could read.

For me, this is a bad sign. This was the first book I stopped reading mid-way through. And after that I realized (although it’s hard for me) that I can stop reading a book if I don’t like it.

Unfortunately I didn’t follow that rule when I read 50 Shades of Grey.

I think I wanted to like it so bad I powered through it! And to be fair it was not soo bad. Ahhh who am I kidding it was trash!

But – I read trash and often like it.. This was just a different kind of trash and it’s my own fault. I like murder, gory, mystery, zombie, crazy, disturbing books. I personally would classify 50 Shades as a cheesy, romantic VERY soft core porn novel.

And I am not a crazy religious, old school thinking person when it comes to sex in a book. I actually think it’s ridiculous all press this book is getting for the “sex” in it. Yes the two main characters have sex a lot. So much so it gets a little old after the first few times. I hope that does not make me sound like a (insert whatever noun you like here) I just didn’t think it was anything to freak out about!

I also think it’s ridiculous that this book is being compared to porn – it’s not porn. And if this is what mommy porn is – than I feel a little bad for the mommies, they should look into renting some hard core porn and then compare.

However, I did finish the first book and bought the second book – but I am stuck in the middle of the second book and can’t get myself to read anymore! If a zombie, murder or some kind of plot does not pop up in the next few pages I think I am done. I will be fine reading what happens in Wikipedia.

Don’t get me wrong – people obviously LOVE this book – it’s just not for me. It’s not my typical genre and I should have known that before I bought it. So for all you 50 Shades and Christian Grey lovers don’t hate me:(

What are your thoughts on 50 Shades of Grey? Should I finish the second book?

Slacker

30 May

That’s me! I am a slacker! And I am slacking at my blogging duties! I apologize profusely! Let me tell you what happened. I got LAZY! That’s it – I suck!

Actually I feel like since May started I have been so busy. Every weekend has been booked and that threw off my blogging groove.

See, I am creature of habit. I need a routine. So my normal routine was get up early on Saturday and go running in the Bosque – then come home and feel really good about myself because I just ran and exercised and was active. Then sit on the couch (which was ok because I just ran) and crank out some blogs!

This was my favorite part of the weekend! Is that sad? Does this mean I have no life? Oh well – I really looked forward to this routine. Then all of a sudden May hit and BAM routine went out the window! There were graduation parties, garage sales, weddings and other events. June is shaping up to be the same.

So I need a new routine and need to fit blogging in because I really enjoy it! And not only did I become a slacker in my blogging reports, but also in my pursuit of hobbies! I have not been running as much or cooking or doing the other things I said I would. Aside from reading, I have lost track of my other hobbies!!!

BUT I am back! I am making time again for my hobbies come hell or high water!

I did manage to read a few books that I will report on at a later date.

So again, sorry for being a slacker – it probably won’t be the last time – but for now I am at it again!

Stay Tuned . . . .
