Series Worth Your Time

21 Nov

So more books for you and your reading pleasure.

I love love love reading series of books because I get so invested in the book and the characters and their stories. Here are a couple series I am really enjoying.

Both are mysteries and about cops. And they both take place in Europe. I don’t know why I love to read about cops solving crimes in the UK and Ireland. I also LOVE Sophie Hannah’s books which are along the same lines – but she is my favorite.

Tana French

The first book in this series is In The Woods. It has won a lot of awards including the Edgar Award for best first book. This book is not scary but a mystery and there are a couple different mysteries in this book. I liked this book – it’s great and a fast read.

What Tana French does is introduce us to the main character for her next book. So in her next book The Likeness – the main character is introduced in the first book and so on. The second book in my opinion was A LOT better than the first book. And the third book, Faithful Place, is better than the second. I have not read the fourth book, Broken Harbor, but it’s on my Christmas list and I can’t wait.

These are such great mysteries and the characters are easy to like and hate. Tana French also makes you feel like you are in Dublin and part of the culture there. She paints such a realistic vision of the good and bad of the cities I feel like I need to start saying Shyte, Eejit and Feck.

The first book in this series is The Burning. I really enjoyed this book! It’s told from multiple people’s points of view and has multiple murders and mysteries. Again it’s fast paced and a great mystery.

I have not read the second book, The Reckoning, but I bought it and will relax with that this Thanksgiving break.

This book will keep you guessing and keep you intrigued.

What are some of your favorite book series?

Vacation = Reading for me!

20 Nov

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and hopefully a lot of us will have some time off work and time to relax. My favorite way to relax is to read! So here are some great books I have read lately.

One of the best books I have read in a long time is a book called Pure by Julianna Baggott. This book is about the end of the world. Yes I love end of the world type books! And it’s a love story but not an annoying one or an obvious one.

This book kept me guessing, reading late into the night and wanting more which thankfully I’ll get in February because it will be a trilogy.

Here is the synopsis:

We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .

Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.

Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .

There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it’s his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.

When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

You have to give the book a chance – it sounds odd and weird but it’s sooooo good.

50 Shades of something. . . .

6 Jun

So like I have said before, I LOVE READING!! It will always be my #1 Hobby!!

That being said, I don’t always love what I read. For example I tried to read Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game. Which is right up my alley and I am fond of Stephen King (mostly his short stories) but I could not get through this book. I was not excited to read it and I didn’t want to go to bed early just so I could read.

For me, this is a bad sign. This was the first book I stopped reading mid-way through. And after that I realized (although it’s hard for me) that I can stop reading a book if I don’t like it.

Unfortunately I didn’t follow that rule when I read 50 Shades of Grey.

I think I wanted to like it so bad I powered through it! And to be fair it was not soo bad. Ahhh who am I kidding it was trash!

But – I read trash and often like it.. This was just a different kind of trash and it’s my own fault. I like murder, gory, mystery, zombie, crazy, disturbing books. I personally would classify 50 Shades as a cheesy, romantic VERY soft core porn novel.

And I am not a crazy religious, old school thinking person when it comes to sex in a book. I actually think it’s ridiculous all press this book is getting for the “sex” in it. Yes the two main characters have sex a lot. So much so it gets a little old after the first few times. I hope that does not make me sound like a (insert whatever noun you like here) I just didn’t think it was anything to freak out about!

I also think it’s ridiculous that this book is being compared to porn – it’s not porn. And if this is what mommy porn is – than I feel a little bad for the mommies, they should look into renting some hard core porn and then compare.

However, I did finish the first book and bought the second book – but I am stuck in the middle of the second book and can’t get myself to read anymore! If a zombie, murder or some kind of plot does not pop up in the next few pages I think I am done. I will be fine reading what happens in Wikipedia.

Don’t get me wrong – people obviously LOVE this book – it’s just not for me. It’s not my typical genre and I should have known that before I bought it. So for all you 50 Shades and Christian Grey lovers don’t hate me:(

What are your thoughts on 50 Shades of Grey? Should I finish the second book?

Packages in the Mail!

8 May

I love getting surprises in the mail!

Even though they are not really surprises, but things I bought – nevertheless I LOVE getting packages in the mail!

What I got in the mail

What I got in the mail

So today when I got home and I had not one, not two but three packages in the mail I literally squealed like a pig and jumped up and down and did the happy jig!!

This is the happy jig! If you see "orbs" in the back ground those are ghosts (so says Paula and Arantha) we just got back from a ghost and voodoo tour in the wonderful New Orleans!

This is the happy jig! If you see “orbs” in the back ground those are ghosts (so says Paula and Arantha) we just got back from a ghost and voodoo tour in the wonderful New Orleans!

Today I got;

The first four books of the series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. I will admit that I got these books because the husband and I watched the first season of Game of Thrones in two days, and we LOVED IT. Since we don’t have HBO we have to wait for the second season to come out on Netflix. But this is the very reason I started reading the The Sookie Stackhouse series, which I also LOVE. And in fact, I only rented Game of Thrones because the next season of True Blood (and Dexter) was not available to rent. The Sookie Stackhouse books are so different than the True Blood series I don’t feel like it’s cheating reading ahead.

If you love fantasy or adventure or king and queen type stuff – then Game of Throes is a show for you. And I will let you know about the books later! Also if you love vampires – read the Sookie Stackhouse series! They are fantastic!

The second thing I got in the mail was a book called White Horse which the husband told me about. He said it was like a love story mixed with the end of the world like The Road by Cormac McCarthy which I LOVE!! I LOVE Cormac McCarthy and I love him even more because he lives in Santa Fe, NM. Every time I am in Santa Fe I hope to see him! Even though I would probably not have the guts to approach himJ

So I got White Horse in the mail today and I can’t wait to read it – because I truly love end of the world survival stories (even if there are no zombies in them) – I’ll let you know what I think.

The third thing I got in the mail was a prescription – not as cool as the book (unless your me and you get the prescription at a super deal because you are doing a mail order) but still it’s technically a package in the mail!

So folks that’s it! I will let you know about the books I got and since this is a prescription I normally take there will be no updates!

Reading Relaxes Me

6 Apr

As I have previously said I love to read! Reading is my number one hobby and always will be! When I was little I was always reading. It could be because I lived in a small town and there was nothing else to do (I didn’t play video games) or because my mom told me she would ALWAYS buy me a book if I asked, so I thought I might as well take advantage of that. I went through my R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike, and Lurlene McDaniel phases. I could not put them down or get enough of them!

But at some point between Middle school and High school – I lost my passion to read. Then one magical night between my freshmen and sophomore year of college, I could not sleep. So my dad handed me a book told me to read it.  He said that the book was really good and I would love it. That book changed my and brought back the passion I had for reading. That book was Harry Potter! I know sounds silly but I will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart for the Harry Potter series. That book lead to midnight book releases parties -which I went to alone at first until I made my husband, then boyfriend start reading Harry Potter and he fell in love too. That book lead to many great friendships struck over Harry Potter discussions and midnight movie viewings, Halloween costumes and so much more! I truly owe my renewed love of reading to Harry Potter, J. K. Rowling and my dad.

So after that long winded explanation, I want to share with you the books I am currently reading and love.

I finished The Paris Wife which is about Hadley Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway’s first wife and love of his life. The book was an easy read and I loved it! Like I said before – I read for pleasure. So, I basically know nothing of Earnest Hemingway’s life. This did not matter in regards to this book. I will admit I looked up a lot of the names in the book on my phone and Nook and it gave me a little more insight to the life and times they were experiencing in Paris. This book gave me an appreciation for the Hemingway’s and that “Lost Generation.”   I recommend it to anyone who loves Paris, Romance and a beautiful insight into the history of Paris in the early 1900s.

I am currently reading the Meridian Sozu series by Amber Kizer – I’ll let you know what I think!
