New Healthy Habit – Sitting on a Fitness Ball!

25 Jul

Some of my colleagues have these fitness balls at their desks and I have always been a little intrigued by them.

I finally had the balls (hahaha) to ask one of these colleagues if I could try it out for a bit.

I sit at a desk for eight hours a day and that cannot be good for your backside. I don’t have the option to lift my desk so I can stand and use my desk so I thought the ball might be a great option.

I also need any little trick to burn an few extra calories, because let’s face it I love to eat bad and drink wine.

So, after my trial, I decided I liked it and let’s face it the ball is only $15 at my home away from home Target.

I looked up the benefits of this and found some good tips at – check out what they said here.

I also found some helpful tips here.

So I am going to try it out and see what happens. Hopefully I don’t fall off.

Anyone else try these balls to sit on at work or home?

My desk and my ball.

This is what I found you should do to make it more comfortable while sitting on the ball.

  • Bounce. Gently bouncing on the ball aligns your spine in its most efficient position and improves the endurance of your postural muscles. Bounce for a few minutes at least every hour that you are sitting. Never bend or twist while you are bouncing. Enjoy.
  • Hip Rolls. While Sitting On A Fitness Ball make a circle with your hips. Do 10 circles in each direction about every hour. This will help to relieve and stretch the muscles of your hips, pelvis, and spine.

  • Pelvic Tilts. Tuck your pelvis under and then go the opposite way by sticking your butt out. Move back and forth, going a little further each time. Repeat about 10 times. This motion opens up the muscles around the pelvis and low back.

Cooking, Baking and all that JAZZ!

24 Apr

I am going to add another hobby to my life. It’s not new, just something I need to do more.

My running hobby attempt is going well and although my knees are mad at me I have been running for a few weeks. I won’t say I am “addicted” to it, or that its become a habit – but I am working on it. And sometimes I look forward to running – and much like homework and church – I am always happy when it’s over!

My next hobby will be cooking more! Like I said before I love to bake and I am actually pretty good at it. However, my cooking skills need a little help.

I also want to cook healthy yummy food which is not always easy. So I am going to TRY and cook healthy versions of food – but that’s not always possible or fun. So if I can find or come up with an alternative version of what I am cooking or baking I will include both versions of the recipe.

My first recipe is one I got from another blogger I adore called Dashing Dish.

I made the Lasagna Roll-Ups and they were indeed delicious! And what’s great about them is they are so good and healthy and it’s just Shane, my brother and me so I had plenty left over for a healthy lunch.

Hope you enjoy!

6 whole wheat (or fiber plus) lasagna sheets

1 cup cooked ground chicken or cooked lean ground turkey/ lean ground beef

1 cup low fat cottage cheese, blended in a blender or food processor until smooth, (or low fat ricotta)

1 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry (don’t like frozen spinach so I left it out)

1/2 cup parmesan, separated

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp italian seasoning (or 1/4 tsp basil + 1/4 tsp oregano)

1 jar spaghetti sauce (I used)

Optional: 1 cup mozzarella sprinkled on top

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Pour 1 cup of spaghetti sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Set aside.

2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil, and cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. (I recommend cooking a few more than 6, just in case one breaks or tears. With any left overs I threw them in another baking dish and made “messy lasagna”)

3. Meanwhile, in a medium size bowl, mix together meat, 1/2 cup spaghetti sauce, cottage cheese, spinach, 1/4 cup parmesan, and spices.

4. When noodles are cooked, drain in a colander, and lay on a kitchen towel to dry. Start assembling lasagna roll ups by spreading 1/6 of the meat mixture over each individual lasagna noodle.

Each roll only has 224 calories – and if you care it’s 6 Weight Watchers Points.

You can easily make this recipe not healthy by using regular noodles and non-organic sauce. But why would you want to? This is seriously so good you will think it’s bad. And I used ground turkey and it was delicious. Even my picky brother liked it!

Believe in the Beautiful

11 Apr

One of my goals/new hobbies is to be more girly! Yes that is right more girly! Now don’t get me wrong I would not classify myself as a tomboy or manly – and I am really girly in some ways but when it comes to makeup and other cosmetic type things – like applying nail polish.

For Christmas I asked for Sephora gift cards because I wanted to try new things. I made my wonderfully patient and beautiful friend Arantha (who has an awesome blog about beauty and fun food called Gourmet Beauty) take and school me on some products. I wanted to share with you what I got with her and what I have found on my own (surprise surprise) just in case I might help another poor unfortunate soul make a crucial make up decision. Below are some of my favorite products.

Makeup – I love – so far . . .

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Illuminating

This is a lightweight, buildable sheer foundation formula that delivers a youthful, radiant finish.

I have never used foundation and I don’t consider this foundation. It’s a tinted moisturizer, although I put on a basic moisturizer with SPF before this because of the dry New Mexico sun.  And I feel like it helps the tinted moisturizer go on better.

Also, because I am makeup challenged it took me some time to understand that a little goes a long way with this. You don’t need much.

BareMinerals SPF Eye Brightener

Or as the common gal would call this concealer. As I get older, ugh, I see dark spots and puffiness below my eyeballs. I decided I needed to look more awake for my co-workers and husbandJ  Arantha recommended this concealer err I mean eye brightener as an alternative to the traditional liquid concealer because frankly concealer freaks me out.

This is easy to put on and makes me look a little more awake in the mornings – YAY!

Physicians Formula Vegas strip/Light Bronzer

One day I was watching tv and it was during the time Jennifer Lopez was all over the place – more than she is now. I thought she was so beautiful and still think she is beautiful but I wanted to copy her. I heard some TV host say she uses bronzer and eats a lot of salmon. So I went to Wal-Mart (yes that’s all I could afford, I was in college) and I got a lot of salmon and a bronzer that looked pretty. Well the salmon was ok but believe it or not I picked a great bronzer.

I don’t think Jennifer Lopez uses this bronzer, she probably has a special bronzer made of real bronze and gold and fairy sparkles but for me this worked. They have different shades – don’t get a shade that is too dark or you will look stupid.

This bronzer is also a double win because you can use some of the shades as an eye shadow – and I am nothing if not frugal and cheap – I mean creative.

Bella Pierre – Shimmer 9 Stack in Bella

So for some reason I am attracted to things that are more than they seem. Or have multiple functions – which is why I like the shimmer  9 stack. Because you get nine eye shadows and you can use some of the colors as a lip stain, blush and bronzer.

I mostly use them for eye shadow but I love all of them!

Sexy Mother Pucker™ Lip Plumping Gloss

I really just got this because I like to say the name! And they used to sell it at Target (and I get most everything I own from Target) now I have to go to Sephora to get it but it’s worth it.

This is a lip gloss (real lipstick scares me) and it’s also a lip plumper. It has something in it that makes your lips tingle and feel fat – it’s basically an allergic reaction on your lips so you have big full lips – the things we do for beauty. But I secretly like how it feels.

WOW for a girl who claims to not know too much about makeup I sure did go on and on! Hope you enjoy!

I work with amazing people! That’s such a great thing to be able to say.

A big habit I want to practice more is being positive and looking on the brighter side of life. I am usually good at looking on the brighter side of things, but at times, I can be a little negative! So in my first documented attempted to be more positive the following events ensued.

My colleague/friend Dominick was calling around locksmith places to get a quote so they could come and unlock his car. He obviously locked his keys in his car but they were still in the ignition and turned so his battery life was draining away!

He got a quote of $45 – which is when I butted into his conversation (as I often do at work – sorry everyone) and told him $45 was WAY TOO much!!!! So instead of cursing locksmiths, I told him we could totally break into his car for him.

Sometimes when I get an idea in my head I can’t let it go until I get some kind of closure.

So, my teammates (not all some were at lunch, some were working. . . ) went to Dominick’s car where we tried to break in. Well not really Dominick thought he had a hidey key but he could not find it, but break in sounds a little cooler.

I will let the following pictures speak for themselves. . . .

Although I just stood around compiling a list of any criminal friends I might know who could break into Dominick’s car – oh and take some pictures – Dan, Ryan and Dominick actually found the key!

Great teamwork people!

Way to turn a negative situation into a positive experience and a nice team bonding experience.
