My top five favorite Olympians

Jesse Owens – USA

Jesse Owens

Jess Owens was part of the 1936 Olympic in Hitler’s Germany. He made history when he won four gold medals in the following events:

–          100 meters

–          200 meters

–          The long jump

–          And as part of the 4×100 meter relay team

When I was in middle school I read a book about his life and I think that is why I like him so much! He has an amazing story before the Olympics, during and after. Read all about him here.

Nadia Comaneci – Romania

The Romanian gymnast has won 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 1 bronze throughout her Olympic career.  Nadia is the first gymnast to ever achieve a perfect 10. Something people though impossible – the score board (I think that’s what it’s called) could not even display the score. It showed a 1.0 confusing some people.

I attached her routine below. It’s so different and impossible to do today because of how far apart the bars are today. Also with the new scoring system the days of perfect 10’s are no longer a possibility. But we will never forget the 14-year-old Nadia who was the first to achieve such a high honor.

Nadia is still involved in gymnastics, read more about her here.

Michael Phelps – United States

Michael Phelps – United States

Michael Phelps 16 Olympic medals. I really don’t need to say any more about Michael Phelps. If you don’t know who he is, I really can’t help you. Google him.

Larissa Latynina – Soviet Union

Larisa Latynina – Soviet Union

Larissa Latynia is arguably the best athlete in the history of the Olympics. She holds 18 total medals, more Olympic medals than any other competitor in any sport, and was responsible for establishing the Soviet Union as the dominant force in gymnastics.  She also holds the record for most individual medals (14 outside of team events) in Olympic history.

Usain Bolt – Jamaica

Usain Bolt – Jamaica

Again, you should know all about this man. He is the world record and Olympic record holder in the 100 meters, the 200 meters and (along with his teammates) the 4×100 meters relay.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for this man because the husband and I went to Jamaica for our honeymoon in 2009 one year after his famous Olympic debut and this guy’s face was all over the place. On cups, flags, ash trays (weird) so he reminds me of our honeymoon.

Usain Bolt will be fun to watch in London – and if you go to his website you will see why.

Saddest Animal Deaths in Movies

26 Jul

Today I am sad, emotional and in a bad mood.

Sorry

A year ago today my cat died. And this was not any normal cat but a cat who won a battle with a rare heart disease, then got cancer. What are the odds?

We had to put him down which basically felt like I made the decision to end his life. Even though I had an amazing vet who made me feel better about it. He was really sick.

My cat Floyd had the BEST personality EVER! Everyone loved him. He was an amazing cat! If you didn’t like cats before you met Floyd you would after you met him. I loved this little guy so much!

So when he died it was sad and hard – and I am no stranger to death, this was just a little harder for me because he was mine completely.

Floyd – Love of my life. One of them 🙂

And isn’t it the case that animal deaths are always hard for people? Like in movies I don’t care if a human dies, but if it’s an animal I am a crying mess for weeks after the movie.

I know personally if there is even a slight chance that an animal might die in a movie I won’t watch it.

So because I feel like crap – I thought I would make a list of the saddest animal deaths in movies. You’re welcome.

PS – there is so profanity below – read at your own risk.

Artax – The NeverEnding Story

Artax – The NeverEnding Story

I think this scene scared me for life. I was a mess when Artax gave up in the Swam of Sadness, even though Atreyu was encouraging him to keep going. Oh god I am crying now! Fucking Swamp of Sadness! The only thing that saved my childhood was the last scene where Atreyu is riding Artax at the end. Thank god!

Antie- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Antie– Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

I will never look at creamed filled cookies, Legos, ants and scorpions the same after this movie.

Fucking Scorpions! Antie had a hard of gold.

Hedwig – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Hedwig – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Really! Hedwig! Hedwig! He had to die! Like Harry didn’t lose enough already! They had to kill his pet! Ugh! Hedwig was killed during the Battle of the Seven Potters in the movie he sacrifices himself to save Harry (the book is a little different) – the book is worse because Harry has to let the sidecar (which holds Hedwig’s body) go so they can go faster. This is very upsetting to Harry, his friends and the readers. Fucking Death Eaters!

Sam (Samantha) – I Am Legend

Sam (Samantha) – I Am Legend

Like it’s not hard enough being the only living person left in New York but let’s mess with you a little more and infect your dog. The only living companion you have left. Given to you buy your dead child. Let’s make sure we infect the dog and force you to kill her. Then, let’s figure out the cure to the infection days later.

I did ask people if the dog died before I watched the movie so I could prepare myself. It didn’t help when I actually saw the movie. Even though I knew what was coming – I cried in the movie theater with everyone else who has a soul. Fucking Zombies/Vampires.

Mufasa – The Lion King

Mufasa – The Lion King

I say Scar is the evilest Disney villain ever. He kills his own brother! At least the other bad guys are just killing random people!

When Simba crawls under his dads paw – ahhh! What the hell! And then he gets blamed for that death! So sad Fucking Scar. However, I will say Scar gets it worse in the end when he basically gets eaten alive by the hyenas.

Bambi’s Mother – Bambi

Bambi’s Mother – Bambi

This is obvious. But this did traumatize me and probably every other kid that realized what was going on. Fucking Hunters.

Littlefoot’s Mother – The Land Before Time

Littlefoot’s Mother – The Land Before Time

So Littlefoot’s mom is saving his ass and that ungrateful Cera from the Sharptooth. Sharptooth basically bites a chunk out of her back and neck and kills her. Well causes her to bleed out. The last moment between the mom and Littlefoot is so sad, again what crying. Fucking Sharptooth.

Old Yeller

Old Yeller

Again very obvious, but anytime you have to put your own pet out of its misery makes the moment worse. Fucking Rabies!

King Kong

King Kong

You know it’s coming but it’s still so sad. I remember seeing the Peter Jackson version of this movie with my dad – as we left the theater there was this little kid crying on his dads shoulder. Like full on hysterical crying! Totally felt his pain. Fucking explores and Empire State Building!

Two Socks – Dances With Wolves –

Two Socks – Dances With Wolves –

Seriously the army makes Kevin Costner watch as they shoot his wolf! The wolf that stood by him the whole movie (and it’s not a short movie) I remember crying my eyes out when I was little! My grandma covered my eyes for the sex scene but not the death of Two Socks! Come on Grandma!! Fucking Army!

Charlotte’s death – Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s death – Charlotte’s Web

When Wilber is screaming CHARLOTTE!!! It breaks my heart! It makes me cry every time I see it or think about it long enough, I am crying now.

Charlotte’s death was no one’s fault. It’s just the circle of life. Fuck you circle of life and old age!

Ray – The Princess and the Frog

Ray – The Princess and the Frog

This cute Cajun firefly from New Orleans is a hero. Takes on those shadow demons, gets knocked down and then stepped on. Yes people he gets fucking stepped on! This has to be the most disturbing Disney deaths ever! Really Disney!

Obviously I am missing some. I have not seen every movie out there (thankfully) – What are some of the saddest animal movie deaths for you?

And here is to my Floyd!

New Healthy Habit – Sitting on a Fitness Ball!

25 Jul

Some of my colleagues have these fitness balls at their desks and I have always been a little intrigued by them.

I finally had the balls (hahaha) to ask one of these colleagues if I could try it out for a bit.

I sit at a desk for eight hours a day and that cannot be good for your backside. I don’t have the option to lift my desk so I can stand and use my desk so I thought the ball might be a great option.

I also need any little trick to burn an few extra calories, because let’s face it I love to eat bad and drink wine.

So, after my trial, I decided I liked it and let’s face it the ball is only $15 at my home away from home Target.

I looked up the benefits of this and found some good tips at Livestrong.com – check out what they said here.

I also found some helpful tips here.

So I am going to try it out and see what happens. Hopefully I don’t fall off.

Anyone else try these balls to sit on at work or home?

My desk and my ball.

This is what I found you should do to make it more comfortable while sitting on the ball.

  • Bounce. Gently bouncing on the ball aligns your spine in its most efficient position and improves the endurance of your postural muscles. Bounce for a few minutes at least every hour that you are sitting. Never bend or twist while you are bouncing. Enjoy.
  • Hip Rolls. While Sitting On A Fitness Ball make a circle with your hips. Do 10 circles in each direction about every hour. This will help to relieve and stretch the muscles of your hips, pelvis, and spine.

  • Pelvic Tilts. Tuck your pelvis under and then go the opposite way by sticking your butt out. Move back and forth, going a little further each time. Repeat about 10 times. This motion opens up the muscles around the pelvis and low back.

My Most Favorite Hobby! Reading!!

23 Jul

The one hobby I know I can stick with is reading!

I love reading. And I just read a couple really good books! The kind of books you can’t put down and you stay up really late to read “one more chapter” – before you know it it’s 4:30 Wednesday morning and you know you have to drink a quadruple latte so you make it through the morning and a then grab a Red Bull for lunch so you can make it through the afternoon and come home and keep reading!

I love that feeling.

I had lost it after I read 50 Shades of Crap. I thought I found it with Game of Thrones but the book is soooo much like the first season of the show that I got a little board. Don’t get me wrong – if you have not seen the show read the book. They show did such a great job I am just going to skip the first book (I only got half way through) and start reading the second book.

So here are a couple books I couldn’t put down:

Savages – by Don Winslow

I have not seen the movie but the book was amazing! But isn’t the book always more amazing than the movie? Yes but this book was exceptional because the writing was so different than what I am used to. It really made you think about what you were reading. And not in an annoying way that makes you feel dumb.

This book was fast paced, fun, sexy, crazy, violent and had twists and turns. I fell in love with all the characters and feel like I learned a lot about the Mexican drug cartels.

Number one lesson – don’t get involved in any way with the Mexican drug cartels! Don’t get involved with the selling, distributing or production of drugs and be surprised when you or someone you love get your knee caps shot up!

So, if you need something different, fast paced and crazy to read – I suggest this book.

I am looking forward to reading the prequel – The Kings of Cool.

Gone Girl – by Gillian Flynn

I love anything by Gillian Flynn!

This book however was so good but so frustrating at the same time! I have never hated the main characters in a book so much but still loved the book until I read this.

Both characters are such awful people! I couldn’t decide which I felt sorry for and which I wanted to “win” – I also didn’t know who to believe!

I would say 99% of the time in a book, movie, TV show, competition of any kind – I am rooting for the girl. Call me a feminist I always want the woman to win.

But in this book – it’s the first time I was not automatically rooting for the woman. I really tried to be on her side but she really made it hard.

This book kept me on my toes and made me sad Gillian Flynn only has two other books which I have already read. Write more lady, I love your books!!!

And so will you so please read this book and her other two! You won’t be sorry!

2012 Summer Olympics (Part 1)

20 Jul

Holy crap! I am so excited! I love the Olympics! Love love love them!!!

And guess what? They are in exactly one week!

YAY!!!!!!

I am so excited!!

So here is some fun Olympic stuff:

To vote for the all-time best Olympic moment go to this link. It’s also fun to relive some of the great moments throughout the games.

Below are some videos I found that list what they believe are the top Olympic moments.

I will admit the music is cheesy and the narrator could be a little more excited – but all his comments are spot on and he picked the perfect moments!

The only one he missed is Kerri Strug’s famous vault!! Which I have included below.

Enjoy!

Color Run

19 Jul

I can’t say that my running hobby has been going too great. . . And 85% of that is my fault (I am lazy) – the other 15% is the fact that my knee sucks!

But I am going to fix this.

First I am going to the doctor so they can fix my knees!

Second I signed up for the Color Run! This way I HAVE TO START RUNNING SO I DON’T LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT! Even though I will be covered in lots of “color dust”

Hopefully the fact that I am paying to run (I know how stupid of me) and the fact that I don’t want to come in dead last will motivate me!

So here’s to doctors, luck, a little hope and a miracle!

The run is August 25th!

Anyone else ever do the color run?

Jam Plan!

18 Jul

Apricots are my favorite fruit!

I love them so much I eat them before they are ready!

I grew up in a small town called Jemez Springs and we always had a lot of apricot trees.

Well, it’s odd to most people but everyone from Jemez would eat the apricots before they were ripe. So they were a little green and a little hard – but they are so good. Especially when you put a little salt on them!

This year we had a lot of apricots and my mom sent me home with a whole bunch. Because I wanted to try something new that reminded me of someone I love!

My Grandma would always make jelly when I was little. She would go to a cannery and make jam with her friends – oh and I tagged a long because I was always with her!

This year because we had so many apricots and they were no longer firm or green like I love them I decided to try something different. I made apricot jam and it came out delicious! This is how I did it!

Enjoy!

Recipe adapted from here

Apricot Jam

What you need:

8 cups diced apricots

1/4 cup lemon juice ( I ran out of lemons at one point so I used lime and it worked great)

6 cups sugar

1 tablespoon butter – you really need this so the apricot jam does not get to watery or foamy. Add this once it starts to boil

(I also added a pinch of salt. I don’t know if that’s against jam rules but I did it and I think it made the apircots stand out more!)

Tips – I used six cups the first time and the second time I cut it in half. I would suggest you start with three cups and taste the jam as it cooks – add more sugar if youthink it needs more.

Make sure you use a cold spoon when you taste the jam. This will also help you determine if the jelly is done. When you scoop it out with the cold spoon, if it’s runny let it boil longer. If you like the consistency you’re done!

Directions:

Sterilize your canning jars by boiling for 10 minutes in a hot water canner or the dishwasher

You will need 5 pint jars or 10 half-pints.

Combine all ingredients in a large stock pot.

Bring to boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves.

Once mixture reaches a rolling boil, continue to boil it for 30 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent it from sticking.

Remove from heat and fill jars, leaving 1/4 head space.

Wipe rims clean and put the 2-piece metal canning lids in place.

Process in boiling water canner for 10 minutes. Or if you put the hot jam in the cans it will seal the cans. Just make sure you can’t pop the top of the can when the lid is closed.

Tip –This is a great time to use the chalk board mason jars and write what kind of jam you made. Good for gifts and being organized!
