Throwback Thursday – Best Dolls from your Childhood

28 Jun

I heard about this study on the radio this week that said girls prefer to play computer games over dolls!

I know! How horrible is that! I LOVED playing with dolls when I was little. And not just girly dolls but I liked boy toys I won’t call them dolls even though that’s what they essentially are. Yeah you macho dads who don’t think you son is playing with a doll because his doll turns into a car or has a gun – hate to break it to you but GI Joe, ninja turtles and transformers are dolls.

Ahh I digress! So in honor of the toys I loved as a kid and to hopefully show those young-ins that computers are not as cool as toys and could one day turn on us (SKYNET!!!) here are some of my favorite dolls from the 80’s and 90’s.

Barbie was my favorite – not going to lie. Although I hated Skipper – that bitch was so annoying!

Got this Ferrari for Christmas – and I loved it and so did all my Barbie’s and New Kids on the Block dolls. I never had Ken doll – just three Donnies and a couple Jordans!

My Little Pony’s! I LOVED THEM! More than Barbies!!!! This particular beauty is Lickey Split! I still have her!

Eww this is Apple Jack – she was my Skipper of the My Little Pony world. I also hated this bitch – she was always causing problems!

This is where the My Little Pony’s lived! Paradise Estates! I would ask for this every Christmas and Birthday! I finally got it for Christmas one year. My mom let me play with it for a year then took it away and said I could have it back later – she recycled my toys so when I did get it back it was like a new toy! Evil or genius??

Pound Puppies!!!!

Popple’s! I had this white one – actually still have it!

Rainbow Brite! Owned and loved all of these ladies and men.

Lady Lovely Locks – I have only met one other person who knew who Lady Lovely Locks was – thanks Arantha!

Teddy Ruxpin! I would put in Madonna tapes in and make Teddy Ruxpin open and close his eyes and mouth to Like a Virgin! Honestly who didn’t do that?

Care Bear Stare!

Optimus Prime!

Ninja Turtles and family! I loved the movies too, especially that amazing performance by Vanilla Ice! Go Ninja Go Ninja Go!

Can’t forget Jem and her friends!

So those are just some of my favorite dolls from my youth. And I will say most of the time my dolls were playing they were running away from the Predator because that was my favorite movie when I was little. I don’t know what my parents were thinking letting me watch that!

What are your favorite dolls?

Summer Time in the Southwest

27 Jun

Now that it’s summer it means a lot of things.

Sonic has half off milkshakes all summer long after eight PM!!!

Traffic is not as bad in the mornings! Amen!

But the biggest thing about summer (in the South West) is that it’s extremely hot and dry!

So although we don’t have to worry about earth quakes, hurricanes or tornadoes we do have to worry about forest fires.

Right now the town of Colorado Springs is losing homes because of a fire. New Mexico just suffered our largest fire in history.

Be smart people – don’t flick you cigarettes out your window (actually don’t smoke eww), don’t light fireworks that are illegal (or at all) basically don’t do anything that will start a fire or could start a fire!

So let’s all take a page from Smokey the Bear and prevent forest fires. We already have to worry about lightning starting the fire – let’s not add to that!

Smokey the Bear

Smokey the Bear

So – on another note – funny story about Smokey the Bear. Having grown up in an area that is prone to forest fires, when I was little Smokey the Bear and that owl friend of his would always come to our school and talk to us. Well, we were little so we totally believed that they were in fact a bear and an owl. Until one day my brother walked in on Smokey the Bear changing out of his costume! It was a sad day to learn that some stranger was actually impersonating Smokey the Bear!!!! It was worse than finding out the tooth fairy was not real 😦

Every one as a top ten list . . .

26 Jun

So, a couple nights I was watching Blood Diamond, watching Leo die (again) and last night I watched The Vow and with the butt shot of Channing Tatum . . . I couldn’t help but put him on the list.

You know the list – celebrities who are the hot to you.

In college, Shane and I and our friends would go over our top ten lists all the time. Shane has recently found a cheat (he always does) So he has a top ten list and a cougar list. So he basically has a top 20 list.

Well, I am going to stick to the rules and go through my top ten list. Now I want to warn you. I have some questionable people on this list – so don’t judge. The heart wants what the heart wants 🙂

And in no particular order:

Jay Hernandez – so pretty.

David Boreanaz or as I like to refer to him as Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer my ALL time favorite show! I will always be a David Boreanaz fan simply because he was Angel from Buffy and will remember that fateful middle school day when I cried my eyes out when Buffy had to kill Angel to save the world. Seriously people if you have not seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer – rent it NOW!!!!!

So like I said – don’t judge me but I think Seth Green is HOT!!!! Again, this might be left over Buff feelings – but I think he is good looking, funny and a great person! Don’t judge Seth Green will always be on my list!

So a lot of the people on my list are there for sentimental reasons. Now I know Channing Tatum is the epitome of hot but whenever I see him I think of my wedding day! When I was getting ready for my wedding we turned on the TV and low and behold Step Up was on HBO and I got sucked in. So not only is Channing Tatum HOT – he also brings back a slew of fun and wonderful memories for me!

I don’t know what to say other than Eminem or Marsha (that’s how I refer to him in my dreams) will always be on my list. Something about him is HOT to me!

“It’s Sean Connery’s Birthday?” (you say to yourself in a Scottish accent) – Ring a bell? Oh well. Sean Connery will forever be on my list. Even when he is old and wrinkly – oh wait – he already is! LOVE HIM!!

Lenny Kravitz – I mean he is just sexy! He cut off his dreads for that cosby girl! So we know he is not only a pretty face but a romantic! And he probably smells better without the dreads!

Ever since I saw Travis play those drums I knew he should be worthy of my list! He is so hot! And for some reason the more tattoos he adds the hotter he gets!

Oh Tim Riggins how I love you. And then you had to go and play one of my favorite X-Men and further solidify my desire for you!!!! Taylor Kitsch can play football or poker with me any day!

Weather he is robbing a bank, transporting people around or finding a way to recharge his heart – Jason Statham is hot! I find him very attractive – and the accent . . . . holy crap!

My love for Ian Somerhalder was not love at first sight. I actually didn’t like him based solely on his portrayal of Boone on lost. Then a blessing in disguise – he dies and gets the chance to play Damon on the Vampire Diaries and Jesus Chisto – I don’t know if he becomes a better actor or he actually becomes a vampire – but lord he turns in to a hottie. Even when he goes back to LOST on the last season – he has this quirky sexy vibe he has on The Vampire Diaries. Dam you Elena!

No explanation needed

And the person who is the inspiration for this post – Leo. I have loved Leo since The Basketball Diaries. That’s so odd that I found a drug addicted school kid hot! Then he had to confirm my love for him when he played Romeo – I was at the vulnerable middle school age and I thought I was in love! So before he was Jack (and dying in yet another movie) I was already in love with Leo.

Oh yes – I must throw in my female crush! Eva Mendes – I mean who does not find this lady beautiful! And come one ladies – we all have a female crush!

Is that not ten? Well I guess I cheated a little too. . . . .

Who is on your list?

National Culinarians Day

25 Jun

Yes, that’s right today is National Culinarians (not sure if that’s a word but I totally dig it – I also dig saying the word “dig” it) Day!

Which basically means today is a day to honor cooks, chefs, bakers and anyone who likes to cook. And the best way to honor a cook is to eat, and love, what they make!

Also, Just in case you care the patron saint of cooks is St. Martha which was my Mimi’s (grandma) name and coincidently is my middle name. And not to go all religious on you guys, but I really love the story of St. Martha – I am sometimes a Martha and her story is a great reminder to have fun, enjoy life and not feel sorry for yourself. You can read her story here.

So back to honoring cooks – My favorite cook is obviously my husband. He is an amazing cook and makes the best Mac Cheese ever! The only thing about Shane’s cooking is I can never share recipes with you because he just cooks. He does not measure, or use recipes he just makes them up as he goes!

Since one of my new hobbies is to cook more (which I have not been doing a good job of) but when I do cook – you can find my husband hovering around making sure I am cooking correctly! Which is a love hate issue for me (and my mother-in-law since Shane’s dad does the same thing to his wife)

I love that he helps me and answers any questions I have and eats my food even if maybe the rice did come out a little crunchy – totally happened!

So tell the cooks in your life “Thank You” today – maybe get them a kitchen gadget they have wanted! Do something special for them.

And – if you are a cook – Thank You! My taste buds thank you, my stomach thanks you and my waist line hates you!

Who are your favorite cooks – and what are your favorite dishes they make?

Steak, mashed potatoes and mac cheese! This is so unhealthy but it was my birthday dinner. Shane made all my favorites! Then he got a fork lift and took me to the movies!

PS – as I am writing this I am watching the end of Blood Diamond and it’s such an amazing and sad movie! Even though I am writing about food, I am crying my eyes out because this movie is so good. Why must Leo die at the end of all his movies? I am going to write a blog post with lists of all the movies he has died in! Sorry – just a random thought!

Throwback Thursday!

14 Jun

So I know my post yesterday was a little more serious than you are used to. And frankly it was more serious than I am used to being. I am typically a bundle of joy! 😉

So I thought I would keep this post funny and light!

I keep hearing the phrase throwback.

I see Pepsi products that are “Throwbacks” and a lot of sports jerseys are now styled as “throwback” – I just think it’s people being lazy and not wanting to create a new brand or image.

Well – call me a hypocrite but I am going to copy them and share with you some throwback Josa!

Nick (the brother) and I in Juarez, Mexico (pre scary Cartel when it was safe) getting bottled cokes from a stand across from our hotel. We used to spend many weeks in Mexico while my dad worked in a factory that his company, Motorola, outscored to! We loved staying in a hotel and swimming in a real pool. Being from the “country” we would swim in the river!

Date Night for Cause!

13 Jun

Cancer sucks!

And I feel like no matter what you do/wear/ingest it’s somehow linked to cancer.

Talk on the phone to much – Boom Cancer!

All Cancer

All Cancer

Don’t eat enough fruits – Cancer!

Drink out of a plastic cup – Cancer!

Don’t get enough sun – Cancer!

Get too much sun – Cancer!

Breathe – Cancer!

So since we are all probably going to get cancer at some point – my amazing family is trying to do something about it.

We joined Relay for Life!

Our team name is The Canales-Lucero’s team in honor of some of the people we have lost to this horrible disease.

We are working with Zio’s Italian Kitchen to raise money. This Wednesday, Thursday and Friday if you print a flyer and eat at Zio’s, 15% of your bill (before tax and tip) will go to our team!

So come on people! Take a night off from slaving away in the kitchen and eat out for a cause! Have a date night! You can still eat healthy here. They have a delicious Strawberry Field salad! And you can also do vegetarian! So there is no excuse! Plus calories don’t count when you are eating for charity!

If you don’t live in Albuquerque (which should be your only excuse for not going since you have three days to make it) you can also donate to our team online here.

Now here are some pictures that I hope make you want to come!

Just some of my awesome family who is part of our team!

This Weekend

11 Jun

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend! I sure did

Friday night I hung out with the Husband and Rochelle. We baked for a benefit/bake sale I had to go to the next day. We also made Flirtinis which my friend Arantha reintroduced us to! They were first made popular in Sex and the City – and they were delicious!

What You Need

  • 1 oz. Vodka (or more depending on the type of day you’ve had)
  • 2 oz. Champagne
  • 2 oz. Pineapple Juice

  • Pour all three ingredients over ice in your Collins or Highball glass
  • Mix gently
  • Garnish with Maraschino Cherry, if desired

We also made some delicious Peanut Butter Brownies and Carmel Bars! I will post the recipes this week.

Saturday the Husband and I went to Jemez to a spaghetti benefit dinner then came home and watched the Heat beat the Celtics 😦 Go OKC!!

Then we started catching up on one of our favorite shows True Blood. We don’t have HBO so we can only catch up on those shows when they come out on DVD! I also read the books (called The Sookie Stackhouse aka Southern Vampire Series – and they are great!)

True Blood

Sunday we watched Gymnastics and cleaned and hung out with the pets!!

It was the Visa championships The Visa Championships serve as U.S. nationals. But this year they also determine the final qualifiers for the Olympic trials, June 28-July 1 in San Jose, which Gianna (sis-in-law gets to go to!)

To get invited to the Olympic trials you had to be in the top eight at the Visa championships or get an invite from Márta Károlyi. Which 2008 Olympic alums Nastia Liukin and Alicia Sacramone did!

More pictures from this weekend!
